Rise of the Tomb Raider Zombie Mode Trailer Looks Like Resident Evil

Gamers on PS4, PC, and Xbox One will soon be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Tomb Raider franchise with a new edition of Rise of the Tomb Raider. The sequel to 2013’s reboot was a game of the year contender last winter and many gamers are ready to revisit the adventure, especially considering the new content that comes along with the package. The additional modes were teased a few weeks ago, but the latest trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider: The 20 Year Celebration finally gives a closer look at what kind of trouble Lara is in for back at her family’s manor.

The new Blood Ties mode takes Lara to Croft Manor, where she must investigate her claim to the family estate. In addition to the clue-hunting mission, there is also a new manor mode called Lara’s Nightmare that pins Croft up against hordes of zombies. The zombie mode may sound like a strange twist for the franchise, but the Tomb Raider series is certainly no stranger to the supernatural.

Here’s a look at both of the new modes in action…

The tone of the new content feels a lot more like a horror game than many fans were probably expecting. Between the jump scares, zombie fights, and third person adventure perspective; this content actually looks a lot more like the Resident Evil franchise than the latest RE7 trailer.

The Lara’s Nightmare mode will be playable in VR for gamers who own a PS VR, so it will be exciting to see how fans take to that experience. With VR still a bit of a niche market, the success of these AAA experiences is crucial to selling the less hardcore gaming crowd on the technology. It seems like a Tomb Raider VR experience built around puzzle solving and exploration might have been a more natural fit for the franchise, but hopefully the zombie shooting gallery is well-executed enough to make up for the lack of originality. This anniversary edition will be the first time that Rise of the Tomb Raider is released on PS4, so it will likely sell well regardless of how the PS VR mode performs.

What do you think of the trailer? Do you plan to pick up the 20th anniversary edition of the game?

Rise of the Tomb Raider: The 20 Year Celebration is scheduled for release on October 11, 2016 for PlayStation 4, and it is currently available for PC and Xbox One.
