DOOM: The Board Game Announced

There aren’t many examples of video games, or to an even lesser extent, first-person shooters, that fans imagined would be transposed into the realm of tabletop gaming, but it seems as if the 2016 reboot of DOOM meets all of the right qualifications for the medium. As it happens, the company Fantasy Flight Games recently announced that it would be manufacturing and releasing “an asymmetrical board game of tactical combat” based on the id Software-developed DOOM.

According to Fantasy Flight Games, DOOM: The Board Game is slated for release sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. The tabletop title allows two to four players to take part, giving them the choice of suiting up for the role of UAC Marines, who are tasked with completing a series of missions with unique maps and objectives, while another player controls Hell’s legion of Cacodemons, Revenants, and Cyberdemon bosses with the more direct goal of killing the would-be Doomguys.

Apparently, DOOM: The Board Game‘s mechanics have some similarities with Fantasy Flight Games’ tabletop title based on the franchise that was put out in 2004, but the publisher has assured fans that the forthcoming release is “almost entirely new.” When describing its intent behind the creation of DOOM: The Board Game, the company said, “It is designed to capture the feel of the video game’s most recent incarnation, complete with fast-paced action, aggressive combat, relentless suspense, and even Glory Kills that allow marines to swiftly execute wounded demons and recover damage at the same time.”

In the past, Fantasy Flight Games has worked on creating card, role-playing, and board game titles for such illustrious licenses as Star Wars, A Song of Ice and Fire, Warhammer 40,000, and even The Lord of the Rings, so it’s safe to say that DOOM: The Board Game has loads of potential due to the company’s solid history with porting and crafting well-known properties for the tabletop realm. Unfortunately, though, an exact release date and price for the title based on the id Software shooter has yet to be divulged.

Lately, it seems as if a lot of recognizable video game franchises have been getting their own board games. For instance, it was announced not long ago that From Software’s action-RPG franchise Dark Souls will be getting its own tabletop game. The company Steamforged Games collaborated with the Japanese development studio to make it a reality, as the two firms crowdfunded the venture, garnering $200,000 in just two hours after its announcement, with the Kickstarter project eventually hitting over $5,000,000 on its final day.

Considering the excitement surrounding the Dark Souls franchise’s tabletop iteration, perhaps gaming fans will revere DOOM: The Board Game just as much, if not more so. Since Fantasy Flight Games just recently made the announcement of its existence, only time will tell.

DOOM is out now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
