Doom 2 Fan Recreates Seinfeld Apartment in Game

If it weren’t for the Internet, it would be impossible for us to enjoy such delightfully weird pop-culture mash-up creations such as the hilarious Leeroy Jenkins and Game of Thrones video that recently made its way online after the HBO show’s latest episode aired on Sunday. Of course, with this being the case, video game modders such as the Doom 2 enthusiast Doug Keener would also be unable to put together wonderfully bizarre set pieces like his recreation of Jerry Seinfeld’s apartment from the popular ’90s sitcom Seinfeld in the id Software-developed shooter.

According to Keener, not only is he a “massive fan of Seinfeld,” but also of Doom 2: Hell on Earth, which makes the marriage of the two properties the perfect combination in his mind. In fact, the modder’s dedication to the mash-up was so fervent that he spent upwards of 100 hours making sure Jerry’s apartment and the show’s main characters made the transition into the game.

As seen in the video below, Keener made use of custom textures for each of the characters Jerry, Elaine, George, Kramer, and Newman, and they can be found strangely perambulating around the apartment with no particular direction or goal other than to simply be there. Not to mention, the Doom 2 modder also included classic audio clips from the show, with lines like “I proclaim this the summer of George!” and “These pretzels are making me thirsty” being spouted out as they shuffle about aimlessly.

Keener’s commitment to the Doom 2 project even caused him to go so far as to create a fantastic main menu for the “game,” which utilizes the Seinfeld show’s iconic logo, as well as George Costanza’s famous semi-nude photo shoot with Kramer from the episode “The Package.” Plus, since this is a mod of Doom 2, the characters are able to be killed, but honestly, it’s hard not recoil a bit after seeing them get blasted into gory bits with a shotgun, even if they’re just pixels on a screen.

Perhaps most interesting aspect is the fact that Keener has allowed the replica of Jerry’s apartment in Doom 2 to be downloaded and used by fans of the game free of charge. Those interested in obtaining a copy of the map can get it right here, but it’s worth noting that the mod is only compatible with Doom 2 and the latest version of GZDoom.

As many fans may be aware, Jerry’s apartment is not only a famous icon in terms of television, but also in the gaming sphere as well. For instance, the Seinfeld set was recreated in The Sims 4 prior to its latest Doom 2 incarnation. Not to mention, a couple of years ago, as virtual reality was just beginning to make its move into the mainstream, the Oculus Rift provided a VR demo letting fans explore the whole apartment. However, while all of these examples of the popular ’90s show merging with gaming are decidedly peculiar, it’s a safe bet to make that no sitcom and game mash-up can be odder than the one with Streets of Rage 2 meeting Tim Allen from Home Improvement.

Doom 2 is available on a plethora of platforms, including PC, PlayStation, and Xbox 360.
