Big Destiny news leaks, upcoming Rise of Iron expansion leaving old consoles behind

Sorry, last-gen Destiny owners, but it looks as though Bungie is going to strand you in The Tower. Tomorrow, Bungie is planning a much-hyped reveal event for Rise of Iron, the next massive Destiny expansion, but thanks to two leaks today, we already have most of the information. It’s not going to make PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Destiny fans happy, because if the leaks are true, Bungie is finally leaving older consoles behind.

The information was gleaned from Bungie’s own site, where eagle-eyed readers quickly spotted and screengrabbed it before it was hurriedly pulled down. It confirmed what we all knew to be true, that the next expansion will officially be called Rise of Iron. What we didn’t expect was a release date, September 20, and what platforms it will be available for, the PS4 and Xbox One.

PS3 and Xbox 360 owners knew this time would come. After all, Destiny was a technically limited game because only because Bungie decided to develop it for last-gen consoles. Because of this, current-gen players were stuck with smaller map sizes, limited inventory space, and slower load times. Some emotes were only available for current-gen systems, and last year’s The Taken King expansion wouldn’t even play if you were stuck on a console with limited storage space. Let’s not forget that Destiny 2 was originally planned to release later this year before being delayed, so it’s entirely possible that they just weren’t planning for old consoles anymore.

For the rest of us with shiny new systems, the date and news for Rise of Iron is welcomed. Along with the Bungie leak, a store listing briefly appeared on the Xbox store (and was preserved on NeoGAF) and showed off even more details about the expansion. The listing revealed that the expansion will contain a new campaign that will center on an area of Old Russia just past the collapsed wall, which jives with the promo art that leaked last month.

Does this mean that we’ll be fighting alongside Lord Saladin, or will he just be talking away in our ears (like every other AI companion) as we do the hard work? Along with this description, the listing confirms just what everyone expects from an expansion: more stuff! Besides the new quests and story campaign, there will be new armor, gear, and weapons, a maximum Light increase, a new raid and strike, and a new enemy faction. There will also be a brand new social space in the Plaguelands (which doesn’t really sound too social of a space to us), as well as a new crucible mode and maps, probably set in the new area. More, more, more!

You will need every expansion for Destiny so far to jump into Rise of Iron, but you can bet they’ll have bundles of the entire saga all ready to purchase on day one for newcomers. In any case, all will revealed tomorrow at 10:00 AM PST, when Bungie’s livestream airs and shows off the new trailer. Until then, Guardians.
