Uncharted 4 Spoilers Discussion

With Uncharted 4: Thief’s End, developer Naughty Dog is out to deliver a fitting conclusion to the adventures of Nathan Drake, while at the same time raising the bar for current-gen releases. To that second point, there has been much speculation about what might happen in Uncharted 4, specifically why the game is called A Thief’s End. Now we know.

So, for those who have finished the game and would like to process their thoughts, this is the place. Be warned that from here on out THERE WILL BE SPOILERS in both the post and the comments.

As it turns out, A Thief’s End was actually a reference to the treasure Nathan and Same Drake are after, not Drake’s unexpected death. By the end of the game, Drake and Elena are alive and well; in fact, the only character to meet their end in Uncharted 4 is Rafe Adler, the main villain.

That being said, Uncharted 4 is not without its twists, specifically the revelation that Sam Drake’s tale about Hector Alcazar is a total fabrication. For some this was telegraphed a mile away, but for others it was an unexpected twist, adding a new wrinkle to the already complex dynamic between the Drake brothers.

There search for Henry Avery’s treasure, which balloons to include a secret pirate utopia called Libertalia, has all the makings of a classic Uncharted adventure, but the character moments help keep things grounded. The globetrotting also puts a strain on Nathan’s relationship with Elena, but who thought they would really break up?

We also would be remiss if we didn’t talk about the Crash Bandicoot Easter Egg in the game. Personally, the way Naughty Dog handled the Crash sequence was excellent, and brought out a fair bit of nostalgia.

Finally, it’s worth talking about the Epilogue in the game, which reveals that Elena and Nate settled down as business owners/adventurers and had (at least) two kids. One of them, it appears, is a budding adventurer herself, featured on magazine covers and what not.

Whether or not this was a tease for where Uncharted could go in the future is unclear, but few would argue that the Epilogue was not a fitting end to the series. Getting to remember all of the adventures gamers have taken Drake on, as seen through the eyes of Drake’s daughter, offers an opportunity to reflect before the real credits roll.

And reflect gamers should, for what is a stunning achievement in game development. For more on our thoughts about the game make sure to read our Uncharted 4 review.
