Dark Souls, Bloodborne Director Working on New IP

Hidetaka Miyazaki’s reign as director of the Souls series has seen unprecedented growth for a franchise that should realistically only appeal to a niche subsection of the gaming market. A combination of a finely-tuned formula and constantly improving game quality, however, has seen the recent release of Dark Souls 3 break sales records within From Software and become one of the most talked about gaming releases of 2016. Although fans of the series knew that Miyazaki had gone on record as saying that Dark Souls 3 would be the series’ last instalment, the massive success the game found this month had some wondering whether or not Miyazaki would reconsider.

Unfortunately, in an interview with Taiwanese site GNN Gamer, translated by a combination of NeoGAF and Google’s auto translate function, Miyazaki made sure to address fan speculation and shoot down any lingering hopes Souls fans had of a different outcome. Miyazaki stated:

While Dark Souls is almost certainly done for the foreseeable future, the statement from Miyazaki is also an incredibly exciting one. It appears From Software wants to head in a different direction creatively after the success of both the Dark Souls series and Bloodborne, the latter of which was one of the best RPGs released in 2015. It also seems as though the new IP won’t be another Souls-style project either, as Miyazaki stated that From Software “want[s] to try making new things”.

Although it is easy to view From Software’s last departure from its tried-and-true Souls series as an undisputed success, the fact is both From Software and Sony felt that Bloodborne was a risk. Bloodborne‘s reception after the fact is probably a big factor in From Software deciding to pursue such a radically different project from what the studio is typically known for, and it will be fascinating to see where Miyazaki and the rest of his team go from here.

In the meantime, gamers will have to make due with the fact that if the Souls series is going away for an extended period of time, Dark Souls 3 is a great parting gift. From Software also plans to release its first batch of Dark Souls 3 DLC in the coming fall, so there will be plenty more Souls action before the series has well and truly departed.
