Phones don’t get much bigger than Xiaomi’s whopping, rumored Mi Max

Smartphones with larger than 6-inch screens haven’t been very common place recently, but Chinese brand Xiaomi is likely to change this very soon with a new device named the Mi Max. It’s expected to be a phablet in the truest sense of the word, with a screen size in excess of 6-inches, making it larger than the Galaxy Note 5, and LG V10 phones. Here’s everything we think we know about it.

Xiaomi’s not being shy about the Mi Max’s existence, and teased the phone on its MIUI forums. The picture shows a smartphone in a jeans pocket, which is supposed to highlight how compact the Mi Max will be, despite a big screen size. The image also gives away the absence of the Mi logo in the top left of the display, something that has been a trademark of the firm for some time.

The photo joins an official event teaser posted by Xiaomi on the Weibo social network, which says the Max will be announced on May 10. Interestingly, the name was chosen by Mi fans after voting out alternatives such as Big, Plus, and Pro. Xiaomi says it will be a new product line for the company, and will sit somewhere in-between the 5.7-inch Xiaomi Mi Note, and the 7.9-inch Mi Pad 2 tablet.

Xiaomi Mi Max Lei JunThat’s not all. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun managed to accidentally-on-purpose show what could be the Mi Max during a live video session at a conference in China recently. The phone was spotted on a table in the broadcast, and although it’s not certain the big device is the Mi Max, there’s no Mi logo in the top left, just like the teaser photo.

Although Xiaomi’s not saying, there are rumors the Mi Max will have a 6.4-inch screen, after specs were leaked through a benchmark test. It adds the display will have a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, and use a hexa-core Qualcomm processor, potentially the Snapdragon 650. Android 6.0.1 is listed as the operating system, but Xiaomi phones all use the firm’s MIUI interface over the top. Other specifications include 2GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front camera.

The Mi Max is unlikely to be announced for many regions outside of China, but may make its debut alongside the Mi Band 2 fitness wearable, which has also been teased by Xiaomi recently. Xiaomi sells the current Mi Band internationally through its own online store. We’ll keep you updated about the Mi Max right here.
