Newlywed journalist tweets face-to-face encounter with Istanbul attacker

A newlywed Iraqi journalist has shared his horrific experience of being caught in the attack at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport in a series of tweets.

Steven Nabil, who is based in New York, had left his wife in a cafe while he went to get food on a different floor. When he heard shots he ran toward her.

“Heard shots, ran fast toward her,” he tweeted. “Came down the stairs to see the court empty and the terrorist firing toward us.”

“We then took cover in a closet inside a hair salon. The 45 minutes we were sitting ducks waiting to find out who will open the door. When the bullets were close I hugged and kissed her.”

Turkish authorities have blamed the Islamic State (ISIS) for three assailants' coordinated gunfire and the suicide bomb attack on Ataturk airport that killed 42 people and injured more than 230.
