Celebrate peak Prince weirdness with a look back at 'Batdance'

"Weird" was never a pejorative where Prince was concerned. Living and creating outside the norm is what defined the man and his work. Just look at "Batdance."

The music video tied to Tim Burton's 1989 Batman movie — the first one to star Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader — revels in the unusual. It's a psychedelic celebration of Batman and his never-ending struggle with Joker, a tune that happily riffs on the theme song from the campy '60s Batman TV series.

The all-Prince soundtrack that "Batdance" appears on doesn't factor very heavily into the movie, but this video was attention-grabbing enough back in 1989 to enjoy a pop culture moment all its own.
