Watch the first trailer for Sundance sensation 'The Birth of a Nation'

A trailer for potential future Oscar winner The Birth of a Nation has finally arrived.

The film tells the story of Nat Turner, a slave who led a rebellion in Virginia in 1831. The trailer is bleak, but powerful, set to Nina Simone's "Strange Fruit."

Birth premiered at Sundance last year to stunning reviews, quickly becoming the breakout film of the entire festival and setting a bidding war record.

Nate Parker wrote, directed and starred in the project, which will hit theaters in October. It also stars Gabrielle Union, Aja Naomi King and Armie Hammer.
