Blackroom is the next game from Doom co-designer John Romero

John Romero and Adrian Carmack made names for themselves in the '90s when they, along with Tom Hall and John Carmack (no relation to Adrian), founded id Software. The company would go on to produce some of the most iconic FPS games of all time, including Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. Romero and A. Carmack may not work at id anymore, but they're returning to video games with Blackroom. Or they will, if the game meets its funding on Kickstarter.

Blackroom envisions a world where the idea of virtual reality has gone horribly wrong. Holodeck-like environments called "blackrooms" are going haywire, mixing up times and places, and even turning violent. Levels will range from medieval castles to the Old West to sci-fi landscapes, as the world around you becomes more twisted and surreal.

Romero will be handling level design and providing his expertise to make Blackroom feel like a classic-style FPS, with circle-strafing and rocket jumps intact. Carmack will dictate the look of the game, designing Blackroom's art assets. And you, well, you play the role of funder. Blackroom is a Kickstarter project after all, with a goal of $700,000. The campaign closes on May 27.
