Hearthstone: New Mage Hero - Khadgar; Lore, Controversy and Issues

A third Mage Hearthstone hero can be purchased only by iOS users for a limited amount of time. Let's learn more about Khadgar!

iPhone and iPad users noticed a new Hearthstone update, which will bring yet another Mage hero to the game: Khadgar! Khadgar is significantly cheaper ($4.99 / € 4.99 / £3.99) than the other purchasable hero skins and all the proceed will go to World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The offer stands until April 24 and is only available to iOS users. After they purchase Khadgar, he will become available across all platforms. You can check out some screenshots with the skin's animations here (uploaded by u/illidAn).

As you can see, this update also includes the April 2016 Ranked Play card back, updated Paladin Deck Recipes and some minor bug fixes.

However, as these lines are written, we suggest you do not update Hearthstone on your iOS device nor buy Khadgar. This update hasn't been launched on PCs yet, meaning merely updating Hearthstone and/or buying Khadgar on your iOS device will make you unable to play Hearthstone on any other platform! Stay put for now, the issue should be fixed within the day.

Naturally, making this offer iOS-exclusive has caused controversy among the Hearthstone community. Most people seem to think that it is unfair to release content like this only on one platform. You can follow a general Reddit discussion on the new Skin here. It's also a bit weird that Mage gets a third hero, whereas most other classes only have one for now. Where are the rest of the skins?

We've left story time for last! Who is Khadgar? In short, he's one of the most powerful mages on Azeroth. Let's start from the beginning, though: Khadgar was a member of the Kirin Tor and started studying magic at a young age under Medivh, who is also a Mage hero on Hearthstone. Medivh soon fell under demonic corruption. It was Khadgar, Mevidh's own apprentice, that put an end to the folly of his master, but with a great cost: his hair went white, his youth was gone forever and he temporarily lost his magic.

From then on, Khadgar's magic power started growing again and he became a staunch champion of the Alliance in their battles against the Horde. It was his master Medivh, who had opened a portal (the Dark Portal) to another world, called Draenor or Outland, which led the bloodthirsty Orcs to invade Azeroth multiple times. The Alliance launched an expedition to the homeworld of the Orcs and Khadgar was part of it. Several events transpired there, almost causing the entire destruction of that planet. In a desperate attempt to save his fleeing allies, Khadgar sealed the Dark Portal from the inside for good and remained alone in Draenor, which was about to be destroyed.

Khadar's first model in the Burning Crusade.

The first expansion of World of Warcraft, the Burning Crusade, leads the players through the Dark Portal to the shattered world of Outland. There, you find that Khadgar is alive and well. Afterwards, Khadgar played a catalytic role in the latest WoW expansion, Warlords of Draenor. Khadgar now helps both the Alliance and the Horde to counter the Iron Horde and Gul'dan. He assists the players to forge a legendary ring, which will aid them storm Hellfire Citadel. After Archimonde, an eredar overlord summoned by Gul'dan, is defeated and Gul'dan flees the scene, Khadgar warns that the threat from the demonic Legion isn't over. We are definitely going to see Khadgar in the upcoming Legion expansion, as well.

Khadgar warns Varian Wrynn and his son, Anduin, about the return of the Burning Legion.

As a young adult, Khadgar is a very enthusiastic, slightly arrogant mage. Once he matures, he becomes a powerful and accomplished wizard, although he still retains his humour and his overconfidence sometimes provides comic relief. His relationship with the Kirin Tor, an elite conclave of mages, has been strained: he started as a member of them, then he left criticising their methods and now he's one of their leaders. He is a voice of reason and always advocates for what's best for Azeroth. A young Khadgar will also appear in the upcoming Warcraft movie, where he will be played by Ben Schnetzer (check a spotlight here).

It is therefore fitting that the slogan for Khadgar's launch is "Protect the Planet. Gain a Hero." If you have an iOS device, you can support WWF and gain Khadgar on Hearthstone. Enjoy!
